10 Reasons Why I Prefer Opera
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007For a while now, I have been testing few browsers to see which one will work best for me. Most of the world would agree with me that Internet Explorer sucks big time. I found Safari to be not so good features wise but has good looks. Firefox is a great browser and is probably everyone’s favorite. But to me, Opera has won the battle of browsers.
There are many reasons why I prefer Opera, I know most of the features I’m going to list are available as extensions for FF, but browsing and downloading extensions has never been my favorite thing to do.
Here are 10 of the best features I like in Opera:
1- Speed Dial: an addictive way to access your favorite websites. Open a new tab, 9 thumbnails of your favorite websites appear. Click and go!
2- Trash Can: if you’re as clumsy as I am, you will like this one. I always find myself accidentally clicking on the X button, closing an important page and end up with a little heart attack. After I recover from the heart attack, I start cursing at my computer as if it was its fault. With Opera, I simply go to the little trash can at the top right of the browser to retrieve whichever page I accidentally closed.
3- BitTorrent: Opera can be used as a BitTorrent client. Just click on a torrent file and it’ll start downloading.
4- Thumbnail Preview: hover your mouse on any tab to see a preview of the page.
5- Mouse Gestures: this feature allows you to perform certain movements with the mouse to access commonly used features. For example: you can go back by holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse to the right.
6- Voice: talking to your browser isn’t something that many people would do, but having the option to do so is definitely super cool. You can use voice commands to control Opera’s interface or have documents or pages read out loud. I haven’t used the voice commands yet, but I had Opera read for me. It’s pretty neat.
7- Sessions: You can save a collection of tabs as a sessions and go back to them whenever you like. Or you can start with the pages you had open when Opera was last closed. If your computer or browser crashes, you’ll continue at where you stopped.
8- Email: Opera has an integrated POP/IMAP email client which is also a news reader, email organizer and RSS/ATOM reader.
9- Zoom: some websites have small fonts that are hard to read. With Opera you can zoom in and out from 20% to 1000% using + and - .
10- Widgets: I don’t use widgets that much but they’re still fun. There are hundreds of widgets available for use with Opera, for example: you can check your friends status on Facebook right from your desktop, you can update your Twitter page, read feeds, play games and much more.
Opera does have some disadvantages, but I found it to be very practical and I enjoy using it. At the end, it is all a matter of personal choice.
